"Nature Versus the Human Spirit" - This unit centers on nature and the different effects it can have on people - how it can cause fear or a mood change for the better. Within the unit, students will read, analyze, evaluate, and interpret poetry and nonfiction texts wit the themes related to natural events and disasters and how they impact the human spirit. They will consider how natural disasters can impact people who live near where they occur, their negative effects, and how people have learned to deal with the effects (changes in NC and people of NC). Students will demonstrate their growing understanding of theme. Research, informational writing, persuasive writing, collaboration, cooperation, speaking, reading and listening creativity, choice and critical thinking.

Henry's Freedom Box Unit - Tell Students will spend the next few days engaging a VERY unusual story about a slave named Henry Brown, who lived over 150 years ago. They will also learn reading and thinking strategies used by historians, and then apply the strategies to figure out what happened to the slave so that they can effectively evaluate the quality of a book, articles written by various people, a video, a picture hanging in a history museum, etc about Henry Brown.

Graphing coordinates, Order of Operations, Patterns & Relationships with Place Value Base 10, Relate this to exponents, Review Multiplication and Division and apply these skills to complete a culminating real world project.

"The Impact of Inventions on Our Lives" - This unit centers on the theme of improving quality of life through inventions of new ideas and improvements upon old ones. Within the unit, students will explore inventions and advances in technology that have impacted and improved man's quality of life through informational texts (with an emphasis on NC). Students will consider people's wants and desires in order to determine what people look for when they call something an impact or an improvement on quality of life. Students will demonstrate their growing understanding of theme. Research, informational writing, persuasive writing, collaboration, cooperation, speaking, reading, listening, creativity, choice and critical thinking.

"What Does That Remainder Mean?" - This project involves multi-step word problems, division, remainders, estimation, multiplication and division, with an introduction to fractions and Singapore Math.

"Journey to Success From Failure" - This unit centers on the theme of how success can result from failure. Within the unit, students will read analyze evaluate, and interpret texts about the expeditions of Ernest Shackleton and his contemporaries and explore how their triumphs and failures contributed to discovery, learning, and personal growth. Students will consider ways in which it may be possible to learn more fro failure than success. Research, informational writing, persuasive writing, collaboration, cooperation, speaking, reading, listening, creativity, choice and critical thinking.
